Jesus the Greatest Physician
by Becky Melendez
Bless the Lord Oh my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who
forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who
redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with
loving kindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good
things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
Psalm 103:1-5
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, And He saved
them out of their distresses. He sent His word and healed
them, and delivered them from their destruction’s. Psalm
107:19-20
God gives wisdom to those in medicine, so they can use that wisdom to
bring healing to people. James 1:5,17, Proverbs 2:6-7
The old and new testaments are so full of healing scriptures, it would
be impossible to put them all on these pages. John 20:30 and
21:25 say the world could not contain the books if all the miracles
of Jesus were written down. Sickness and disease rob people of
happiness, health, and money which is needed for other things. Sickness
and disease are not the will of God for His people.
God does not want a curse to be upon His children. He wants to bless
them with health. Under old testament law, those who did not obey the
law, were allowed, by God, to be afflicted with sicknesses by Satan.
Read Deuteronomy 28:15-68. We are now under a new covenant.
But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is
also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better
promises. Hebrews 8:6 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law,
having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who
hangs on a tree”. Galations 3:13
Why did God send Jesus?
From the beginning to the end of His public ministry Jesus was healing
those who were oppressed by Satan. When evening had come, they
brought to Him many who were demon-possessed, And He cast out the
spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might
be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He
Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.” Matthew
8:16-17, Isaiah 53:4-5
Jesus always healed anyone who had faith in Him to receive. See
Matthew 4:23-24, 9:27-30, 35 Mark 6:56, Luke 17:19.
Jesus died on the cross so we could be saved
from sins, healed from diseases, and freed from poverty. 1 Peter
2:24, Isaiah 53:5
If Jesus healed people in Bible times, He can still heal people today
because Hebrews 13:8 says Jesus Christ is the same yesterday,
today and forever.
How does Jesus Heal People Today?
Through church elders. Is anyone among you
suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is
anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and
let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will
raise him up, And if he has committed sins he will be forgiven. James
5:13-15
The Bible also says anyone who believes can do
the same works that Jesus did. And
these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out
demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents;
and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they
will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Mark
16:17-28
Matthew 10:8, Luke 10:9, 17-19
We can ask the Father
in Jesus name. If you ask anything in My name, I will
do it. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the
works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will
do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I
will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask
anything in My name, I will do it. John
14:12-14, John 15:16, John 16:23-24
What can hinder people from receiving healing?
Even those in the
medical profession know that unforgiveness can cause disease. Mark
11:24 says to believe that you
receive the things you ask God for and you will have them.
Then verses 25-26 go on to say
“And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone,
forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your
trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father
in heaven forgive your trespasses.” See
also Matthew 6:14-15,
18:23-35. Choosing
not to forgive others, hurts no one but you. Ask the Lord, in Jesus
name, to bring to your remembrance anyone who has hurt you, then it is
up to you to choose to forgive that person.
Jesus healed and
forgave sins simultaneously. We need to always repent before God of any
sin in our lives, and sometimes confess our sin to others. Confess
your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may
be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man
avails much. James 5:16
note: a person does not have to be
saved to be healed. Jesus healed many unbelievers and then after being
healed they believed in Jesus as their savior.
What can help a person receive
healing?
The study of God’s word brings faith to receive
healing. My son, give attention to My words; Incline your ear to My
sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst
of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And
health to all their flesh. Proverbs 4:20-22 So then faith comes by
hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17
Don’t give up, keep believing that God’s word is
true. Keep thanking Jesus for dying on the cross so you can be healed.
For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will
of God, you may receive the promise: Hebrews 10:36 God acts for the
one who waits for Him. Isaiah 64:4 That you do not become sluggish,
but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
Hebrews 6:12
Read carefully what Isaiah 58:6-11 has to
say about fasting. Food is not the only thing it is good to fast from.
Verse 8 says our healing can spring forth speedily. See also
2 Thessalonians 3:1
If you are doing something you know is sin
STOP. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart
from evil, It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your
bones. Proverbs 3:7-8
Speak pleasant positive words. Pleasant
words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to
the bones. Proverbs 16:24
Being happy and
having a good attitude is entirely up to you. You can choose to be happy
whatever circumstances you are in. A merry heart does good, like
medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones. Proverbs 17:22
Remember God created the universe, nothing
is too hard for Him to do. Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the
heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There
is nothing too hard for You. Jeremiah 32:17, 27 There have been
confirmed reports from around the world of people being raised from the
dead, cured of aids, and missing body parts being created. If God
made the universe and everything in it He can surely fix anything that
afflicts you.
