Luis and Micaela Maulas
Batopilas, Chihuahua, Mexico

Luis and Micaela founded Iglesia Redencion (Redemption Church) in 2000. Now called Casa de Dios (House of God) It is the
first and only Protestant church in Batopilas. They started meeting in a
borrowed building. In June 2004 they moved into their new church
building. They still need to build Sunday school rooms and a parsonage.
They have three daughters, Esmeralda, Flor, and Victoria.
When they first started in Batopilas they faced great resistance from
local drug dealers, witches, and religious people. They have grown to a
place of respect and influence in the community. Besides their work with
the Mexicans they minister to the Tarahumara tribal people.
Batopilas is located in southern Chihuahua in a deep canyon. The last
39 miles are a dirt trail that takes us an average of four hours to
drive. It is carved into the side of the canyon wall and would challenge
even the most courageous.
